Mumbai weather is classified as tropical, or more precisely tropical wet and dry. Situated close to the Arabian Sea, weather in Mumbai can divided into three distinctive seasons: winter falls between the months of November and February, the emergence of March also signals the arrival of summer that runs through to May, while the rest of the year is considered to be the monsoon season. The condition that provides the missing link between all three seasons is the prevailing warmth in conditions: irrespective of the time of year you visit Mumbai, be prepared to come across fairly warm weather that seems to be ignorant of whatever weather type prevails at the time.
Another characteristic of Mumbai weather is its rather high levels of humidity. Moreover, humidity seems to be a permanent feature of Mumbai weather at any given time of the year, usually peaking between March and October. To make matters even worse, between November and February conditions in the city are marred by the prevailing dryness.
Understandably, the summer weather in Mumbai is predominantly hot, conditions frequently becoming muggy and unbearable, especially for those not accustomed to its peculiarities. Temperatures soar to highs of 35°C and over, monsoons bring along heavy showers and although they have a tendency to make temperatures take a dive to more bearable levels, conditions remain rather sticky.
During October and November Mumbai weather becomes somewhat easier to bear as they rains become increasingly lighter in severity. By the time winter descents upon the city, weather in Mumbai puts on its finest disposition. Temperatures drop to a significantly cooler 15°C during December and January, remain pleasant throughout February as well.
Summer is a rather unfortunate time to be visiting Mumbai, as conditions are so hot they become unbearable, marred by high humidity levels and temperatures that often reach a sizzling 40C. By the time June rolls in, the dreaded monsoon season has already hit the city. Although arriving slowly and gradually, the monsoon season brings along heavy showers, although sunny spells are also quite frequent. But make no mistake: rain is almost a permanent visitor on a daily basis, and humidity is at its highest.
